| The island of Zanzibar lies 72 km off the coast of Tanzania mainland and is 150 km south of the Equator. The island is surrounded by mangrove beaches on the west coast and pristine white beaches and coral reefs on the east coast, offering spectacular diving; Karafuu is on the east coast. Air Tanzania fly Jhb-Zanzibar (via Dar Es Salaam) every Wednesday and Saturday. We recommend the Wednesday flight as it is direct to Zanzibar, returning via Dar Es Salaam. The Saturday flight connects to Zanzibar on the same day, but on return you have to spend Friday night in Dar Es Salaam. Karafuu is a five-star hotel on an endless beach, with a huge swimming pool and accommodation in large, air-conditioned, sea-view chalets set amidst lawns and coconut palms. The owners are Italian, and the main hotel is an interesting blend of marble and traditional open-plan Arab design that takes advantage of sea breezes.
