BEACH CAMP, NOSY BE, MADAGASCAR

FOUR, SEVEN AND ELEVEN NIGHT PACKAGES

Air Madagascar flies between Jhb and Antananarivo every Wednesday and Saturday. We recommend departing on Sat as the flights connect through to Nosy Be on the same day. Dep Jhb 0935, arr 'Tana 1345, then connect to Nosy Be at 1445 for 1550 arrival. The return flight departs Nosy Be on Fri at 1120, arriving in Tana at 1225 allowing an afternoon to explore 'Tana with an overnight stop. Return flight to Jhb departs 'Tana Sat morning at 0600 arriving in Jhb at 0830. Using the Wed flight, you would have to overnight first and last nights in 'Tana.

ANTANANARIVO: is a fascinating city with a rich history, well worth a visit. The daily market is not to be missed, but beware of child pickpockets!

NOSY BE: Means "big Island" and lies off Madagascar's north west coast. The main town/harbour is Helville, a charming settlement in French colonial times but a wreck now. From Helville it's an hour by boat to reach the Beach camp (on the opposite side of the island) where you are only a stones throw from prime fishing waters.

PACKAGE COSTS

The camp is a simple affair of large, walk-in tents under palm trees at the water's edge with central dining area. Basic, but very comfortable (proper beds) and with excellent food. The boats are moored within the coral reef, a few metres off the beach. A max of 16 guests can be accommodated.

PACKAGE INCLUDES: return flights ex Jhb, SA dep tax, CNS travel bag, all airport transfers, boat t'fer to fishing camp, six nights accom at the Beach camp with all meals, final night at the Cheval Blanc Hotel in Tana with breakfast.

MADAGASCAR VISA: we can have the visa processed for you at R160 per visa or you can visit the consulate personally -- Jhb: 13 6th Street, Houghton Estate (p) 011-442 332, hours: 0900 - 1300; Dbn: 201 Percy Osborn Rd, Morningside (p) 031-239 704 (cost R140).

THE BOATS

One 12 metre Mauritian Striker (Clementine), and three 6.5 metre South African ski-boats with flying bridge, powered by twin 85's and custom built for Madagascar's usually flat waters. These are walk-around craft, ideal for fly and light tackle; all boats carry full range of Penn International and Shimano tackle from 30 lb through 130 -- so take own fly and light tackle.

A second 12 metre Striker will be based at the camp from June 1998.

BOAT HIRE: Clementine - FF3 500 French Francs (@ 1.18 = R2 966), 6.5 metre ski-boats - FF2 500 (R2 119). Hires are per 10 hour fishing day per boat. Clementine takes five anglers comfortably; the ski-boats can take four anglers but are more comfortable with three.

FISHING SEASONS

Madagascan game fishing is in its infancy, but April through to July appear to be the peak billfish months; marlin to 350 kg have been taken, and it is common to see 100 sailfish a day on the surface. December to March are hot and rainy, though the rains fall mainly at night.
