| 4WD: Within a comfortable driving distance of the lodge there is a huge variety of water accessible by four wheel drive vehicle. From streams with easy access and good shallow wading, gentle riffles and pristine pools to more challenging rivers where bush clad canyons hide some real surprises. North Island Angling Adventures: Fishing for big trout with small flies off the beaten track is part of every anglers dream. In a country as sparsely populated as New Zealand there are alot of opportunities to explore such waters. Flowing out of the rugged mountains of the central North Island are some of the most magnificent trout streams in the country. Cold and crystal clear waters tumble from ravines through dense rain forest and wind their way through rolling farmland to the ocean. Cruising their depths and feeding in the riffles are often fish that rarely see another angler.
North Island Angling Adventures offers extended fly fishing safaris to this daunting variety of water off the beaten track. Our professional guides have an extraordinairy knowledge of this back country and its unique blend of local people, places of interest and dramatic scenery. Expect to drop by the local winery or pub for refreshments and enjoy a streamside BBQ for lunch. Transport is provided by modern 4WD vehicles and accommodation is usually at homestead farmstays or in wilderness cabins near the river --- you can sometimes get to choose as these programs are as flexible and freewheeling as you (and the weather) wish to make them. The fishing is often at the invitation of local farmers or landowners, and their company will usually guarantee lifelong memories and friendships. HUNTING TRIPS, CHARTER LAUNCHES, AIR CHARTERS ALSO AVAILABLE. PORONUI RANCH 1 HR. DR. SOUTH OF TAUPO CLIENT NOTES: JIM WALLACE STAYED THERE DURING THE LATE SEASON. SAID IS WAS THE BEST OVERALL OF ALL THE PLACES HE FISHED WITH. SMALL COOK HOUSES & CABINS CAPACITY IS 4 PEOPLE AT A TIME. 2 MAJOR RIVERS RUN THROUGH THE AREA. LOW PRESSURE ON THE FISH. GOOD PEOPLE. Every year brings a few changes to the lodge and we have now enlarged the bedrooms, installed heating and completed the private bathrooms for each. Our fishing program continues to develop and having a helicopter based right on the property has allowed us to extend our activities considerably. There is no doubt that a helicopter trip into a remote mountain stream is the ultimate NZ trout fishing experience and we are now offering such fly-outs daily. Apart from the legendary big fish rivers of the North Island (like the Rangitikei) we have found some wonderful little mountain streams with big rainbows that are totally inaccessible except by helicopter --- I wonder if you saw the program on ESPN "Fly Fishing The World 11 with John Denver and I when he took a heap of big ‘bows over 24 inches on the dry fly from one of our secret fly-out streams north of Taupo? The easier techniques required to catch these fish make a great contrast to the "stalking" and precision casting that most New Zealand browns demand.
