Lake Taupo Area - One of New Zealand's Best
SEASONS: Year round flyfishing.

LAKES: Lake Taupo - Harling (shallow water trolling)

October through January, Lake Taupo and the Delta - year round, Lake Otamangakau - January to April, Lake Rotoaira - October through June.

RIVERS:

October & November - Rivers and streams outside the Taupo area open on October 1 for spring fishing for resident browns and rainbows. The Tongariro and other small streams entering Lake Taupo still hold migratory rainbows. Rainbow fishing in the lake for rainbows feeding on smelt in the shallows as well as Delta flyfishing from anchored boats.

December to March - Headwaters of the Tongariro and other streams entering Lake Taupo open December 1.

Great nymph and dry fly fishing begins. This is an excellent time period to helicopter the upper Tongariro and float fish the upper river in a wilderness setting. Best dry fly action is during the cicada hatches in January/February on the lower Tongariro and Lake Otamangakau.

April & May - The best time of the year to fly fish the upper Tongariro and other streams. Excellent helicopter and float fishing opportunities.

June to September - The height of the Taupo spawning runs in the Tongariro and other Taupo rivers. Upstream nymphing on long leaders, weighted nymphs.
