Fly Fish Abaco Abaco's Bonefish Flats

Bonefish like this are why fly fishers from the world over flock to the Bahamas to fly fish - and the remarkable waters around Abaco have some of least fished flats - you can walk to some right from the lodge!

Spectacular flats bonefishing & offshore bluewater fishing opportunities! Abaco Island is justifiably famous for its fabulous fly fishing for bonefish. Nowhere else in the northern hemisphere or the Caribbean will you find larger bonefish or more accessible deep sea fishing than on the fertile fishing grounds near Bahamas Backroads Fly Fishing Lodge. Other inshore species include tarpon, permit, barracuda, lemon, black tip or tiger shark, mutton snapper and a myriad of others.

Located off the beaten path in the small village of Little Harbour, the Bahama Backroads Fly Fishing Lodge offers bonefish fans excellent bonefishing options and one of the best kept secrets in the Abacos. From the shores of the Bahama Backroads Fly Fishing Lodge property the expansive flats of Robinson's Bight begs for fly fishers to discover their opportunities with a guide or on your own. It is possible to wade in the shallows when the tide is running and cast for bones that can tip the scales at seven or eight pounds with occasional heavier bonefish well into double digit range to the determined angler. This is heart-pounding bonefishing action that any bonefisher will find as challenging and rewarding as any bonefish destination on the planet.

Beyond the immediate shoreline the extensive Robinson Bight estuary spreads out into a labyrinth of small islands, creeks, mangroves and blue holes where you can find not only fish but plenty of solitude. Two sea kayaks that come with the lodge offer one of the most convenient ways to venture unobtrusively into this tidal estuary, which is also a nesting ground for a variety of cranes and stork.

With this much fishable water so close by, any inshore fly angler will find all the ingredients for a rewarding and productive fishing trip.

If you want to save your energy for casting our local fly fishing guides provide a flats boat and show you the myriad of flats and reefs where the fish are working.  Five miles from the Bahamas Backroads Fly Fishing Lodge lies another relatively undiscovered bonefish flat in the likes of Cherokee Sound. Again, our local guides who have plied these water since near infancy, understand where this crystal clear sea comes alive with big bonefish.

Then, of course, there is the bonefish Mecca known as The Marls, where the bonefish might not come in the size of Robinson's Bight but often host impressive numbers of fish.

Fly Fishing Tip...

February through June are good times for bonefish and July into the beginning of August can be more difficult on the flats. The flats will warm up quickly during the day and you will find most of your fish mudding in the deeper, weedier and cooler water just off the flat. This time can be very productive. You will also find tarpon here during the warmer months and as August wanes, bonefish will come up onto the shallower flats in increasing numbers all the way through November. As waters begin to cool in late fall, bones will reverse themselves and swim out into deeper water. Into mid December, you can see the water warming for a few weeks, bringing the bones back onto the flats. Planning fishing trips around the new moon, or a few days after a full moon will generally make for more productive fishing.
