WRC BannerAlaskan Peninsula

Remote, incredibly productive, and serviced by a trusted operator!

The Camps:

Wind River Camps the brand of experience for anglers who are seeking a real "off the beaten path" Alaskan trip! Situated in the remote lower region of the well-known Bristol Bay sport fishery, the camps are located in the pristine and uninhabited reaches of the Alaska Peninsula. At the camps, Ed and Judy Sharpe explore one of the last untouched, isolated and seldom-fished corners of Alaska.

Wind River Camps are for the adventurous! They are designed for minimal impact on the surroundings to maintain the pristine nature of the undisturbed wilderness. The deluxe camps are equipped for maximum guest comfort. Utilizing the latest technology in portable buildings, the weatherports are the same as used on Mt. McKinley and Mt. Everest base camps and in the Arctic and Antarctic regions. They have proven to withstand the harshest of weather conditions. Sleeping quarters are 2 bed carpeted 10' x 12' units, heated by oil stoves. Electrical needs of the camp are supplied by quiet, efficient wind turbines, supplemented by a small gas generator. Unlimited hot showers are available in camp. With a few concessions to the remoteness of the area, the food served at Wind River camps maintains Ed and Judy Sharpe's strict standards for high quality.

The Fishing:

Wind River Camps fish small, wadeable streams using outboard jet boats to access five to ten miles of fishable waters at each location. Generally, they fish no more than 2-3 miles from camp. The king salmon fishing is from mid-June and mid-July. In addition to great fishing, you will see sights few have a chance to experience: wild caribou herds migrating across the tundra, large moose, brown bears, foxes, seals and walrus. As well, there are birds of every kind: eagles, Canadian geese, emperor geese, sandhill cranes, trumpeter swans and puffins. If you like to photograph and fish, this is a true paradise! Special flights can be arranged (weather permitting) to land on the Bering Sea coastline near the camp and view close-up a beach where up to 2000 immense male walruses spend the summer. Because of the close proximity to prime fishing spots, Wind River's fishing program revolves around quick jet-boat access from the camps to great fishing water.

Alaska Peninsula silver salmon fishing is exciting. Large fish begin to arrive in good numbers in mid-August with the peak of the run beginning in late August, continuing through late September. These fish average over 10 lbs. in weight with many fish 13 or 14 lbs. and a few large fish approaching 20 lbs! Silvers arrive in our river chrome-bright from the ocean as we are fishing just above tidewater. The Wind River Silver Salmon Camp offers nearly 10 miles of fishable water with no other camps in the entire drainage.

Getting There:

It takes a little extra effort to reach the Wind River Camps. From Anchorage (450 miles from the camps) you catch a commercial flight to a nearby fishing village. Anglers arrive at camp via small wheel plane charters. Special charters can be arranged from King Salmon, the commercial hub at the head of Bristol Bay. The camps are nearly 200 miles away from the Dillingham-King Salmon area.

EVALUATION REPORT...

The climate and countryside of the Alaskan Peninsula are not for the faint of heart! In June and July, you can expect numerous sunny days in the 60's, interrupted by short spells of Bering Sea fronts. For silver salmon fishing in August and September the weather fronts sometimes become more frequent and intense. Before October 1st, there are few non-flyable or nonfishable days. But weather can alter the fishing plans at any time and anglers considering visiting this remarkable area should be prepared for possible travel delays.

Ed and Judy Sharpe have been fishing Alaska's rivers for more than twenty-five years. They have established a known reputation and track record with the success of Wilderness Place Lodge at Lake Creek (located 70 miles northwest of Anchorage) over the past 12 years. Wind River camps provide an extension of this top-notch service into a wilder, more remote setting, ideally suited for the angler with a sense of adventure and desire to achieve totally remote wilderness fishing.
