KATMAI FISHING ADVENTURES TACKLE GUIDE

KING SALMON TERMINAL TACKLE - 7-1/2 to 9 foot spin or bait cast rod. Your reel should hold 200 yards of 20 - 25 pound test and should be spooled with fresh line. Make sure the drag on your reel is smooth and ready for heavy action.

HARDWARE - Magnum Wiggle Warts (made by Storm), S.E. Hot Shots (Luhr Jensen) and Flatfish in the following colors and/or combinations of colors; Orange-Silver-Gold-Black-Pink-Blue-Green. Spin n Glo's; size 2, with or without skirts and /or mylar wings, preferable tied with two single trailing hooks. These should be in the same various color combinations as the plugs. Use 3-4 feet of leader material in 30-40 pound test to snell the hooks. Teaspoons, size 5, Little Cleo's, Monte Spinners and Skagit Specials can be useful at times when the fish are being fussy.

FLIES - 9 - 12 weight rod and a reel with a strong drag, plenty of backing and a line with a 10 foot fast sink tip. A good selection of the following flies will help insure your success; Flash Fly, Everglow Fly in chartreuse, Sparkle Shrimp in hot pink and orange, Bottlebrush, Fuchsia Bunny Bug and Lefty Deceivers tied on 1/0 or 2/0 hooks.

SOCKEYE SALMON TERMINAL TACKLE - 6-1/2 to 8 foot spin or bait cast rod. Your reel should be spooled with 10-15 lb. test, fresh line.

HARDWARE - Most sockeye fishing is done in single hook areas. We recommend you change all hooks to single hooks before you arrive to save time in the field. Pixies (1/2 oz.), Lucky Glo's, Bangtails, Little Cleo's and Rooster Tails can all bring results.

FLIES - 6 - 8 weight rod with a strong reel spooled with 5-7 foot fast sink-tip line. Your sockeye fly assortment should include Brassie Nymph, Gold Comet and Sockeye Orange flies tied on size 2 or 1/0 hooks.

SILVER SALMON TERMINAL TACKLE - 6 to 7 foot spin or bait casting rod, with 10-15 lb. test, fresh line spooled on your reel.

HARDWARE - Silvers are the most aggressive salmon species. You will want to offer them something flashy and tantalizing; reds, pinks, oranges, silvers and greens tend to be the colors most likely to bring out their aggressive qualities. The following are only a minor sampling of the lures used for silver fishing. You should bring/use any spoon or spinner that has brought you luck in the past and try it out; all of these should be purchased in size 3 or 4 or ½ oz.; Pixies, Mepps, Lucky Glo's, Rooster Tails, Sneaks, Flash n Glo's and Vibrax.

FLIES - 7 - 9 weight rod with a reel containing a reliable drag and a 5 to 10 foot fast sink tip line. Popsicle's, Battle Creek Special, Flash Fly, Everglow in chartreuse and orange, fuchsia Bunny Bug, Lefty Deceiver, Katmai Slider and Pollywogs are all effective flies, these should be tied on 2 - 1/0, strong or
stainless hooks.

RAINBOW TROUT - ARCTIC CHAR - GRAYLING TERMINAL TACKLE - 6 to 7 foot spin or bait cast rod or an ultra light set up. Spool your reel with fresh 6-12 lb. test line.

HARDWARE - Most lures should be in the 1/8 to ¼ oz. and contain only a single hook. Marabou jigs, Pixies, Daredevils, Little Cleo's, Mepps, Oakie Drifters, Castmasters, small Spin n Glo's and little corkies, Rattle Traps, Wee Warts, Hot Shots (small), Rooster Tails in a variety of colors should bring you success.

FLIES - 6 - 8 weight rod, with a minimum length of 9 feet to handle the wind. Bring floating and a variety of sink tip lines or a line system, to accommodate all water conditions you might encounter.

WET FLIES - Wooly Buggers and Worms in black, olive and rust brown, Egg Sucking Leeches in purple and black with orange and peach egg heads. Marabou Muddlers in white, brown, black and olive and Bunny Bugs or Flesh Flies in white, ginger and pink. Large wool head Sculpins in color combinations
of black brown and olive and a few deer hair mice. All of these should be tied on size 2 - 6 hooks. A fair selection of bead head nymphs can come in handy for early season bows.

DRY FLIES - Mosquitoes, Adams, Royal Coachmen, Black Knat, Bivisible, Humpies, Royal Wulffs and Mayflies in size 10 to 16 are a good selection for
starters.
